The Centaur
Exposed work, fused with AI
A lot of what you do is the kind of work AI is getting good at. But instead of waiting, you have started working alongside it, and that makes you faster than most.
- Your superpower
- You already know how to get real work out of AI, which most people in your field are still figuring out.
- Your risk
- Your edge is speed and fluency, and everyone else is catching up. Standing still for a year would quietly erase it.
What it means
Centaurs do work that sits right in the path of AI: writing, analysis, code, research, production. On paper their jobs look exposed. In practice they have turned that exposure into leverage by making AI part of how they work every day.
The name comes from chess, where human-plus-computer teams once beat both humans and computers alone. A Centaur gets more done than a person alone and more judgement-led results than a tool alone.
The challenge is that the advantage is temporary unless it keeps moving. As AI tools become standard, the edge shifts from "uses AI" to "knows what to build with it, and owns the outcome". Centaurs who move up the stack, toward judgement, taste and responsibility, stay ahead.
Signs you might be a Centaur
- Your biggest tasks are writing, analysis, code or production work
- You use AI daily or it is core to how you work
- You use AI for more than one kind of task
- You are comfortable changing your workflow when tools change
